About Me

Kelly's Story

Kelly is a genuine, fun-loving human with an affinity for unique moustaches. As much as those statements become glaringly apparent upon meeting her for the first time, she is a proud Cree businesswoman, born and raised in Treaty No. 1 territory.

Kelly is a marketing student in the business and administration program at the University of Winnipeg, and a digital marketing professional and entrepreneur, with a drive to make a positive impact in the local community through the not-for-profit organization the Indigenous Parents Community.

Kelly is a natural storyteller and believes she is making her change in the world by spreading her message of identity and empowerment through this blog.

She is the loving mother to one beautiful daughter and believes that her daughter is the driving force behind her ambition. Kelly invites you to join her on this journey, as she shares her perspective and experiences, along with valuable resources to inspire change in a positive way for Indigenous peoples.

Back when Kelly’s daughter was born in 2014, she felt overwhelmed because she did not know how to support her child or how to be a good mother. After staring at her daughter’s big brown eyes for months, Kelly knew that she wanted more – more for her daughter and more for herself.

Kelly knew she needed to be better for her daughter, so she started to look within and realized she needed to make a change. Kelly decided to go back to university and pursue what she was naturally good at, sales and marketing.

Kelly is now in her final year, on the cusp of graduation, and she is very proud of the accomplishments she has achieved over her post-secondary educational journey. Kelly strongly believes she would not be where she is today without the support of her family, friends, and beautiful daughter.

As Kelly’s journey is now coming to an end, she has realized there are parents out there just like her who might be struggling to believe that graduating from university while raising a child is possible.

This got Kelly thinking, ‘What if there was a place where Indigenous parents could go to receive the support they needed to succeed in university?’ And just like that, the Indigenous Parents Community was born.

Kelly wants to share her experiences through the last year of her university education, how she started a not-for-profit business, finding her way through her professional field, and being a mom, all while reclaiming her Indigenous identity through this blog.
