The Strength of Generations: A Tribute to My Mother and Daughter

I started writing this post as a tribute to my mother, who embodies resilience and strength. She has supported me since we came together, and I have been blessed with her presence in my life. As I write this post, I reflect on how her resilient spirit has been passed down to my daughter. It’s incredible to see how much of her wisdom and determination has also been instilled in my daughter. Through this post, I want to pay homage to both of them and explore the strength that has run through our family for generations.

My mother has always been an incredible source of strength for me. From childhood until now, I still turn to her when things get tough, or I need advice. She is always there with a listening ear, wise words, or comforting arms if I need them. In addition to being a source of comfort and support throughout my life, she has taught me invaluable lessons about life, love, and hard work.

Her generosity and strength were indeed a marvel to behold. She guided me with compassion, never asking more of others than she did herself. I owe her tremendous gratitude for paving the path that enabled me to turn my dreams into reality – all while advocating fiercely for things she believed in.

My mother’s strength is also reflected in my daughter—she has inherited many of the same qualities that make my mother so special and unique. It’s amazing how many similar traits they share—which makes me overwhelmingly proud daily! My daughter is strong-willed and determined, just like my mother before her. She brings out the best in people around her and never stops striving to improve each day – no matter what obstacles come her way.

“The world needs strong women. Women who will lift and build others will love and be loved. Women who live bravely, both tender and fierce. Women of indomitable will.”

– Amy Tenney

There are countless stories from Indigenous women who have shown tremendous courage throughout history—and it’s clear that their legacy lives on today through my daughter, myself, and all Indigenous women everywhere! My daughter is still young, but she already knows what it means to stand up for something you believe in despite any adversity or opposition you may face. Her tenacity is inspiring, reminding me of my mother’s example and our Indigenous roots.

This post was written as an homage to two powerful women – one who has been with me since my beginning – and another who continues to shape my life daily. Their example inspires me every day, reminding me that no matter what comes your way – if you stay true to yourself and never give up – anything is possible! Ultimately, this post celebrates the generations of resilience found within our family, something I am deeply grateful for every single day.

As Indigenous women, we carry the legacy of our ancestors within us – their strength, resilience, and determination are part of who we are. As a mother, I see that same strength and leadership in my daughter. Watching her grow and achieve milestones fills me with pride and motivates me to keep pushing forward in my own life. As for the generational strength passed down to me from my mother, I am committed to passing it on to my daughter. Together, we can continue to inspire each other as we strive towards our goals – building a better future for ourselves and future generations.

As this International Women’s Day approaches, remember you are never alone in your journey toward success. We are part of a larger community of Indigenous women who support each other as we strive toward greatness! Draw strength from those who came before you while inspiring those who will come after you.
